Cryotherapy at WorxClinic

What is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy simply means treatment using very cold temperatures. At WorxClinic, we use this technique to safely remove unwanted surface skin lesions by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. The extreme cold destroys the targeted cells so your body can naturally replace them with healthy new skin.

What is liquid nitrogen?

Liquid nitrogen is the cooled, liquid form of nitrogen gas — the same gas that makes up 78% of the air we breathe. It is extremely cold, with a boiling point of –196°C, and is stored in a small insulated canister. When applied to the skin, it freezes and destroys the unwanted tissue quickly and precisely.

What can cryotherapy treat?

Cryotherapy is commonly used to treat benign (non‑cancerous) skin lesions, including:

  • Skin tags

  • Warts

  • Verrucae (plantar warts)

Your clinician will assess the area first to ensure cryotherapy is the most suitable option for you.

What happens during the procedure

Liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the lesion using a fine spray device. Most people do not need local anaesthetic — the sensation is usually described as a brief sting or intense cold that settles quickly.

  • The freezing itself lasts just a few seconds, depending on the size and thickness of the lesion.

  • The treated skin turns white, then thaws over 1–2 minutes.

  • Sometimes your clinician may repeat the freeze once the skin has thawed.

After treatment, the area may react in a similar way to a mild burn: redness, swelling, or blistering are all normal. A scab will form over the next few days and usually falls away within 2–4 weeks, depending on the area of the body.

How to care for the treated area

Good aftercare helps the skin heal smoothly:

  • Keep the area dry for the first 24 hours.

  • After this, wash gently and pat dry — avoid rubbing.

  • Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly (e.g., Vaseline) daily to prevent crusting and support healing.

  • Avoid picking the scab, as this increases the risk of scarring.

  • A dressing is usually not needed, but you may use one if the area is likely to be rubbed by clothing or knocked.

Most areas heal well, but occasionally the skin may be left slightly lighter or darker in colour. Rarely, a small scar or ulcer may develop, especially on the lower legs where healing is naturally slower.

Possible side effects

Immediate effects

Pain or discomfort Cryotherapy is generally well tolerated. Some people experience a brief stinging sensation during treatment or mild soreness afterwards. Taking paracetamol can help if needed.

Redness and swelling This is a normal response and usually settles within 2–3 days. If the area is near the eyes, temporary puffiness may occur.

Blistering Clear or blood‑filled blisters are common and harmless. They usually settle as a scab forms. Do not puncture blisters unless advised by a clinician.

Infection (uncommon) Signs include increasing pain, redness, warmth, or pus. This may require treatment from your GP.

Later effects

Scarring Uncommon, but a small pale mark may remain.

Pigmentation changes The skin may become lighter or darker, especially in darker skin tones. This often improves over time but can be permanent.

Temporary numbness If a small nerve is affected, the area may feel numb for a few months.

Recurrence Some lesions may return and require repeat treatment.
