What is ear wax?

Ear wax or cerumen is a natural secretion produced by the ear that lubricates your ear canals, helping to keep them clean and free from infection. However, a build-up of extra wax can cause problems, if you're experiencing:

  • muffled hearing

  • blocked or full sensation

  • ringing in the ears

  • discomfort or dizziness

It could simply be ear wax build-up.

What causes ear wax build-up?

Some people naturally produce more ear wax than others. As we get older, ear wax can also become drier, which affects the ear’s natural self‑cleaning process and may lead to blockages. Narrow or hairy ear canals can have a similar effect. Regular use of hearing aids, cotton buds, ear plugs, or in‑ear music earbuds can also contribute to wax build‑up by disrupting the ear’s natural ability to clear itself.

What is ear irrigation?

Ear irrigation is a safe and effective way to remove excess ear wax from the ear canal, provided the wax is not hard or impacted. This modern technique replaces the older method of syringing. It works by gently flushing warm water into the ear canal using a nozzle attached to an electric pump. The water helps to loosen the wax, which is then washed out into a cup held beneath the ear. The procedure should be comfortable, but as with any treatment, there are some potential risks and side effects. These may include:

• Ear canal discomfort or pain

• Infection

• Tinnitus, dizziness, or vertigo

• Damage or trauma to the ear canal or eardrum (including perforation)

• Infection of the bone surrounding the ear (mastoiditis)

• Temporary or, very rarely, permanent hearing loss

Limitations to ear irrigation

It’s important to remember that no method of ear wax removal is completely without risk, but ear irrigation is generally considered a safe alternative to traditional syringing. However, it isn’t suitable for everyone. This treatment may not be recommended if you have any of the following:

• A recent ear perforation or a history of perforation

• Previous ear surgery, such as a mastoidectomy

• Grommets currently in place or removed within the last 18 months

• Current ear pain or infection, or an infection within the past 6 weeks

• A cleft palate (even if repaired)

• Use of blood‑thinning medication

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is a safe and effective method of removing ear wax from the ear canal. It uses a gentle vacuum to carefully lift and clear excess wax from the ear. While suitable for most people, microsuction may not be appropriate for individuals who find it difficult to keep their head still, are prone to sudden head movements, or are very sensitive to loud sounds. It may also be unsuitable for those with a history of severe dizziness. As with any procedure, there are some potential side effects. These can include temporary discomfort in the ear canal, tinnitus, dizziness, or vertigo.

How does the Earworx Clinic wax removal service work?

What to Expect

1. Book an Appointment

To get started, simply book an appointment by calling 07780 664351 or emailing jane@earworxclinic.co.uk. During booking, you’ll be asked a few questions to help determine whether microsuction or irrigation is the most suitable option for you.

2. Before Your Appointment

To help soften the wax, please use olive oil ear drops, such as Earol, available from most pharmacies, for five to seven days before your appointment. Spray the drops into each ear twice a day. If your wax is impacted, you may need to continue this for up to two weeks. For guidance on how to use Earol, you can visit: https://hlhealthcare.co.uk/product/earol/

3. Your Appointment

Your appointment will last around 30 minutes. We’ll talk you through the process, answer any questions, and make sure you feel comfortable before we begin. You may notice an unusual sensation during treatment, but it shouldn’t be painful.

4. After Your Appointment

Try to keep your ears dry for a few days to allow a new protective layer of wax to form. For ongoing ear health, regular use of olive oil drops can be helpful.

A small number of people may feel briefly dizzy afterwards, but this usually settles quickly. If wax removal is not successful, we’ll discuss the next steps with you. If no wax is present, only a consultation fee will apply. You may also be advised to see your GP so your ears can be checked for other possible causes of your symptoms.
